I have always liked this class of high-magnification cameras, since on the one hand, they allow you to shoot distant objects, on the other, due to the large diameter of the lens, they work better in low light conditions than ordinary compact cameras. And, perhaps, Nikon cameras are among the best in this class. And when the time came to replace the L820 with something fresher, the choice was predictably settled on the Nikon Coolpix B500.
Besides, one of the obvious advantages of this camera is its rather affordable price.
It comes in a regular cardboard box with basic information on it, urging us to connect the camera to a smart device (as it turns out, a very useful feature).
And in far from the richest configuration, so that the newly-made owner, delighted with the opportunity to save money, subsequently bought very expensive accessories. Nevertheless, all the most basic things to start using are included in the kit. Or almost everything.
So, after shaking out the contents of the box, we find the camera itself, the lens cap and a small strap to attach it to the camera in order to avoid loss, an instruction manual with various booklets of little interest to anyone, a strap, a cable for connecting to a PC (this is Nikon, so the cable is - as before), as well as 4 AA batteries. Even some tiny memory card is not included in the kit, although before often at least some was included in the kit, so that it was possibl Nikon Digital Camera e to at least check the purchase for performance.
On the end ring of the lens, we can see its main characteristics. A hood can be installed on the ring (which, of course, is purchased separately). Fastening of light filters is not provided.
There is an autofocus lamp next to the lens, which must be taken into account when holding the camera in your hands, since it is quite easy to accidentally close it with your finger.
On the left side of the lens there is a slider for zooming in / out and a return button. A little higher is the key for raising the built-in flash (since there is no "shoe", you cannot put another one, alas). And on the body of the camera itself, we see the designations for the presence of WiFi, Bluetooth and NFC modules, which allow you to connect the camera to a smartphone or tablet to transfer images and, perhaps more importantly, to control the camera, that is, use the smartphone as a remote control when shooting with a tripod. In addition, the connection with a smartphone allows you to add GPS data to the picture, if there is such a need. Setting up is easy, especially if the smartphone also has an NFC module. It is enough to bring the smartphone to the camera, after which the smartphone itself will download the corresponding application and start the process of setting up the connection, which takes place almost completely automatically. Here developers are definitely a plus.
The flash after pressing the key is raised by the action of the spring, lowered manually. Quite stupid, and should be used only in cases of emergency, or as a command for a slave flash used as the main one.
At the top around the shutter button there is a ring, which, similar to the slider on the lens, allows you to zoom in or out of the image. There is also a camera on / off key and a mode dial next to it.
A separate button for enabling video recording is displayed on the back under the thumb. It should be noted that the video camera shoots pretty well, better than many budget camcorders. True, the length of one video, as in earlier models, is limited to 29 minutes.
